Dr. Matthew Torrington is a Family Medicine physician with a specialty
in Addiction Medicine as well as a clinical research physician.
He involved in the residential and outpatient treatment of substance
abuse disorders as well as clinical research. He has a clinical
focus on the treatment of stimulant dependence, opiate dependence
and pain.
Dr. Torrington's inpatient work has included participation in
safety and efficacy trials for new pharmacotherapies for stimulant
dependence as well as investigations in GHB pathophysiology. Dr.
Torrington's outpatient work includes medication trials regarding
the treatment of both cocaine and methamphetamine dependence, examining
pain tolerances and thresholds in opiate dependent patients both
before and after treatment; and the study of medications that may
alter modified pain responses in opiate dependent individuals.
Most recently Dr. Torrington has been collaborating with Dr. Walter
Ling in the development of outpatient treatment models for opiate
dependence focused on buprenorphine in combination with cognitive
behavioral therapy.
A graduate of Bowdoin College in Maine, Dr. Torrington earned
his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College Medical School. In addition, he completed a clinical research fellowship at UCLA's
Integrated Substance Abuse Programs (ISAP), one of the foremost
substance abuse research groups worldwide.
Licensed to practice medicine in the state of California, Dr.
Torrington is a board-certified family medicine physician and a
certified medical review officer. He also is certified by the American
Society of Addiction Medicine and the American Academy of Pain
Management. Dr. Torrington is a member of the CSAM committee on
opiate dependence and the Friends Research Institute Institutional
Review Board.
Dr. Torrington maintains a private practice in Santa Monica,
California specializing in patients with substance use disorders.
He also serves as the medical director of the Matrix Institute's
narcotic treatment program, the medical director of the Prometa
Center in Los Angeles, and a consulting addiction specialist with
Summit Centers Malibu.
